Out of a family of five kids, I was designated the official in-house birthday card maker. I grew up loving to draw and paint and make things. I loved Bugs Bunny, Rocky & Bullwinkle, Mighty Mouse and MAD Magazine. I enjoyed drawing cartoons and caricatures of my mom and dad and was blessed with parents who had a great sense of humor and made a great audience. I was encouraged to paint murals in the basement playroom and the hallway bathroom. I was official “class artist” in grade school and got to paint great, long signs for special events… I’ve been a maker-of-things for a long time.
In art school I majored in illustration. My love for cartoons and making things led me into the field of stop-motion animation where I was a sculptor/animator on projects such as the California Raisins for Will Vinton Studios, The Penny Cartoon for PeeWee’s Playhouse, Wallace and Gromit films for Aardman Animations, The Adventures of Gumby to name a few. I also worked on many commercial projects and co-owned a small animation studio called Sculptoons in San Francisco with animation director, Tom Gasek.
After my son was born, I segued into working as a freelance artist on a variety of animation and illustration projects, working in modeling clay, wire, acrylic paint, watercolor, pencil, scratch board, fabric, Photoshop, Illustrator....pretty much everything including the kitchen sink. All along, I noticed that the tactile experience of fabricating, sculpting and animating always informed and improved my drawing. For the past few years I have been focusing more on drawing and painting from observation. I enjoy the exercise of drawing what I see, not what I know. It’s like a meditation. I work in acrylic which dries quickly and allows me to build up transparent layers to create a luminous quality. Limiting my choice of media to paint on canvas allows more time for observation and exploration of shape and color regardless of subject matter.
My art business has been designated as a "Trusted Art Seller" with The Art Storefronts Organization, which means you can shop with confidence, and know that I stand behind the quality and value of my products.
